You couldnt pay someone to draw a decent caricature of you in this town. I spontaneously drew caricatures at the Grande Prairie Street Performers festival. The only picture i still have is this one i did of my friend Chris. I'd like to learn from a pro and do this at summer festivals someday...

Public Art

Doing public art is the biggest rush in the world for me. I recently participated in a sand sculpture contest at Slave Lake Alberta. The contest isnt as big as the one at Harrison hot springs BC but there where some talented artists and six competing teams this year. We didnt place but the judging was fair.

Celebrating our past

Sometimes its easy to forget that we have history in modern Canada. In my region I think it comes from the current pre-occupation with the oil patch and consumer goods.

Euphemia Mcnaught is my regions most recognized artist. She studied with the group of seven in ontario and brought what she learned back to the Peace region. She died just short of her 101st birthday. Today her familys homestead is recognized as a provincial heritage site. I never had the pleasure of meeting her but did spend the day, with others, sketching at her homestead.

I had a lot of fun experimenting with these. Its amazing the diffrent graphical effects you can get by experimenting with layers and brushes in photoshop. A person could use the same method each time and really refine the work method or try a diffrent approach to each piece. Either a painterly effect or a cel shaded effect and be produced.

Here are some sketchs based on my summer forestry job and a person I work with.
I tried a trick of flipping your image horizontally to help spot problems in the image. I certainly spotted the problems but it didnt get me of my lazy ass to fix them...maybe later.

In personal news I'm going to north country fair by slave lake for the weekend. I'd really like to develop my skills to the point where I could feel comfortable getting paid for characteratures. Forecast calls for rain mixed with sunny breaks.

Ya'll know what im talking about no? It's okay, neither do I. Just senseless doodling while watching "the game". Had a fun time coloring this in photoshop.

***Protip: Set layer style to multiply and color over your line art layer. Great for building up colors and picking up on any underlying colors.

In other news, I received my art book by Stephen Silver and love it. Its an art book mixed with a light "how to draw" feel. When designing faces one of his methods is using a figure eight and varying the size and shape of the two loops. The nose can be approximatly in the center but thats not a hard rule. Heres some fun I had with this method.
